Dither

Hi members,
I was reading a paper when I come across these words "VCO dither"
Could someone explain what is dither ? Does mean noise or it is another thing ?

Re: Dither

I have never heard of VCO dither. Dither is noise satisfying some criteria (Bandlimited CF / periodical zeros in CF., etc) that decorrelates the input and the noise., so that even though overall noise floor increases, the tones are reduced and the noise is evenly spread out. Dither is used in the SD modulator in the feedback divider to reduce the fractional spur levels. Probably this is what is indicated as VCO dither..., just guessing.
