Need explanation of soft switching wrt buck converters

Soft switching

Can someone explain soft switching wrt buck converters...say if I am using a pmos and an nmos for switches what is the advantage of zvs(turn on when vds~0) and zcs(turn off when ids~0)

I read that it reduces the CV2f losses but how?
