I think if 1,2,3 and 4 are the power to each 7 segment and one missing common VCC to the display, then the first schematic is good.
About the firmware the best way is to get an interrupt timer to switch between 7segment, i dont have in C but i have in assembly you can check it here : http://electropepper.org/downloads/item/counter-asm.
