I want to replace a rotary volume control with a digital push button volume control (for 3.5mm jack) that does not include amplification. looking online they all seem to amplify the audio signal. is there a non-amplified push button volume control circuit out there somewhere?
I basically want it to act the same as the rotary where it can lower the received volume to nothing then back up to the received volume again.

 

Thanks Klaus. I have tried looking up digital potentiometers but there is no clear instructions or tutorial of how to make a simple volume control.
i tried using the DS1802 but I did not want to use both positive and negative power inputs and there were no instructions to do otherwise, so i could not get it to work.
Is there a way to make a digital potentiometer using a typical external hard drive's 12v AC power supply as I have a few of these lying around
 

Hi,

look for: AD5122/AD5142

they have dual power supply and very low power. Two cell coin batteries will work many weeks.

Also check if signal voltage range is OK for you.

edit/added: i just recognized it has no pushbutton function. An additional ATTiny?
Or you just use analog SPDT switches and several stages....
