Modify beaglebone linux

i'm wondering if i can replace the linux in the beaglebone board with a new compiled linux by me .

PS: i choosed beaglebone for it lowcost.
 

The BeagleBone boards are shipped with a Linux based on The Ångström Distribution, an OpenEmbedded Distro:

BeagleBoard Kernel Sources

The BeagleBone use the TI AM3358 ARM Cortex-A8, therefore any Linux distro which supports this ARM, accompanied by the appropriate patches and drivers should port to the board.
