Microcontroller network

I need to build a microcontroller network, i have tough to make it with CAN or RS-485. What do you think is the best protocol for make it, thanks

Is there any other protocol better for make an emmbedded network?

I think you choose the hardware: CAn, RS485 and then define your own protocol for communication depended on the needs for your use.

I use a 5V/20mA current source to create a busline on which all micros are connected with single Rx/Tx pin. The pin is always Rx, except if the micro like to transmit. When transmitting, just short the busline with the data bits: 1= 0v, 0=5V

If you have only one master in your network - better solution is RS485. If you have many masters in the network - use CAN intrface. With CAN you can assign priority for each transmitter.

Hi,
You can also use I2Cbus in single or multimaster arrangment. The limit is distance (ie capacitance of cable) if not buffered. Without buffer and low capacitance connection some meter of cable can be used at 100Kbaud.
