mcp2120 or 2150 to palm gps interface?

im trying to make connection between gps and palm using irda, i m not using microcontroller, just the lines tx/rx of the mcp2120 but unsucessful.
i thing my solution is use mcp2150 because it have irda protocol implemented in hardware...somebody here have experiences with palm irda and can give me tips?
