ARM architecture is becoming the standard! ARM is low cost low power 32-bit processor. Since Philips introduced LPC2000 series, at under $10 chips, there is no since of using 8-bit microcontrollers. The only reason you would use PIC or AVR, for example, is the extreme low power these chips have. LPC2000 chips draw over 40 mA! Keep in mind, you have 32-bit processor running at 60 Mhz, in the LPC2000 case.
