Small and usable is Windiff from WinNt 4.0 reskit and Win32 SDK.
Free, open sorce project from Source Forge "WinMerge"
http://winmerge.sourceforge.net/

Good comercial product is "Beyond compare 2",
other than I do not test, ExamDiff (pro), Araxis Merge ....

And FC.exe from command promt ...... :)

tkdiff for textpad

total commander have built-in file compare function

i have an excelent file comparison utility
it is developed by script language
and you can see the source code
also you can use it in linux

Re: File compare utility

Maybe HexWorkshop can help You. I can detect text deletion/inserction between text files.

Re: File compare utility

search in google for beyond compare. It is a good software for comparing files and folders. It is professional.

Re: File compare utility

I also agree that 'beyond compare' is very good compare utility.

It can compare the text , binary, directory, image.

You can get this utility at 'www.scootersoftware.com'

Re: File compare utility

Use ultraedit editor and then File/File compare.

Re: File compare utility

Hi,
Do you know any file compare tools that it can compare two files and it can also detect moving text.
Many file compare tools only show some lines which deleted from the first file and in the latter file show that lines which added to it.
When I worked with windows 98 I have one tool that do it very nice but it don't work in windows 2000.
Ever tkdiffb that I presented to you in some early emails can't do this. although you can add this feature yourself to it if you understand tcl.

Re: File compare utility

just use UltraEdit, it is a wonderful tool.

I test kdiff3 but i think it's not better than tkdiff.
Because if you have two file and click one enter in first of it and compare them using kdiff3 you see that whole of the file will be highlighted.
But with tkdiff not.
Of cource kdiff3 is good. The other features is the same with tkdiff.
But kdiff3 has an advantage it is an exe file and not need any other tools.
Thx of Antharax for presenting kdiff3

Re: File compare utility

You could try to change the diff algorithm/application kdiff uses.
I never tried it but it should be possible (probably you'll loose the possibility to diff between 3 files and have some other problems ;-)).
tkdiff is a pretty good one, but not when you don't have the possibility to install the tk-toolkit at univ/work (as you mentionned)

Re: File compare utility

Have tried the hxxp://kdiff3.sourceforge.net/ on a 98 SE. It keeps crashing and system must be reboot.

Re: File compare utility

IMHO, the gnu tool diff does a great job in detecting difference of text files. It can ignore blank lines.
