Hi Guys,
I have windows XP and linux red hat 9 installed on my machine. some time back i had trouble with windows and had to format and reinstall it . but i forgot to do something abt my linux partition. so after i installed XP as usual i lost my MBR and could not boot in the linux partition. i tried using the intial floppy i created when i first installed linux. but it still does not boot. is there any way to get the installation back w/o having to reinstall linux???

Regards
Rogger

use the first disk that you install redhat
restart your computer with cdrom
when the install screen appear type "linux rescue"
and enter
after several enter
type "chroot /mnt/sysimage"
and then type "grub-install /dev/hda"
restart your computer
hope this work

regards

hi ,
Does the same apply if i have LILO. i don;t remember whether i had lilo or grub.
so when u say use the Cd rom and type "......" so do i need to use the command line mode or the gui mode?

Hi Tuza,
when u say run grub-install /dev/hda
is hda refering to the boot partition for linux which could be hda* on my machine?
correct me if i am wrong

did you say you formatted? that may cause a problem because the disk would have been wiped clean.

grub-install /dev/hda means that reinstall the grub in your harddisk, and will not format the disk.

if you use lilo just type lilo and not grub-install /dev/hda
