FreePCB is free layout software with all the important features.

so why are people paying for it from other vendors?

Layout software

i think they are lazy to look for free. they pay and they have right away. just my opinion...

Re: Layout software

what about other free softwares like gEDA
I have no experience with them but here you can find more softwares:

besides these bcz of available "Protel" I'vnt consider free software yet. (actually free refers to freedom :D)

Re: Layout software

Does FreePCB provide possibilities to create constraint rules for 1200 MHz DDRQ RAM and crosstalking free Rocket I/O's ?

All the important, is a huge statement, that might be forefilled in Your case, but i find Expedition and Allegro more accurate for our needs.

But in private, Yes freePCB is perfect.
