knoppix Linux

Hi

Knoppix Linux

Free and Open Source Live Linux CD.
Knoppix is a GNU/Linux distribution that boots runs completely from cd.
It includes recent linux software and desktop environments, with programs
such as OpenOffice.org, Abiword, The Gimp, Konqueror, Mozilla, and
hundreds more quality open source programs.

A resource for users, developers, and testers of Knoppix:

tnx

I use and enjoy it throughly. Wonderful treat!

Why would you want it to run entirely from CD?

No need to create a partition on hard disk and install it separately. Just insert the cd-rom in drive and set option in bios to to boot from cd-rom and you have a system running linux for you. Take out cd-rom reboot the system and you are back in windows. It runs even on a 486 machine.

Excellent option for those who want to explore Linux.

It is ok to run linux from cd but what when you want to load in programs compile ddistributions and save data to hdd how will u use it in this case?

Question

I'm wondering how to execute the program on the hard disk under
knoppix Linux environment.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've tried it before, but have no idea about running other
softwares exist on hard disk

The Knoppix Linux is a good distribution for all the people that want to test and learn about this OS. But if you want to get into the system deeply I recomend to install an standard distribution on the hard disk (Debian, RH...)

So, it means that Knoppix Linux is suitable for new user of linux, right?? If I need run some EDA tool, this version of linux is not a good choice ??

Re: Question

We all are wondering If we could run EDA tools on Hard from knoppix.

tnx

knoppix Linux is a good OS. It's great while you just wanna try out linux and do not wish to mess up your current HDD/OS.

You can use it as a test drive without paying a lot of cost if you don't like it later.

But, if you plan to use linux for some serious stuff, it's not that recomanded to use it.

Knoppix question

I tried this knoppix linux in my machine. It has a great interface, bunch of software bundles, and is indeed a good option for linux newbies like me.

However, I encountered several problem, and see if you guys have any clues:

(1) my cable connection was OK with XP. But it doesn't seem good with knoppix. Is there any setup that I skpped?

(2) when I tried to tar the synopsys 's syn_2002.05-SP1_linux.tar, it says something like " Read-only directory". I think I did the "chmod 777." in the current directory.

(3) Anyone tried to install synopsys linux tools in Knoppix? What should I do with taz file?

Thanks for your time.
