Just a Q. spotting GSM RF activity ...discoverable?

Yes my Q. is:

Being in a desert with your cell phone ON (there are no base station BS around is it possible to be descovered, being traked down in another word spot the RF activity of the GSM phone. eg from ground/space?

All comments appreciated (I am sure the brightest of you have a lot to say )

a regular GSM cell phone cannot be tracked in my opinion.
The first thing that your cell phone does when it gets ON is that "it listens" for transmited signals of BS. Only if "it listens" something it transmittes to it for response!

of course if you have your cell phone ON while travelling to the desert someone has already a few possibilities to track you.

As Katarina told yo. When you switch on your mobile phone, it makes power measurements on cells around it. If it detects nothing, there's no RACCH emitted by your phone... but frequency synthesizer of your mobile still working to try to find a BS.
