Because of the fact that home portable generator normally do fluctuate the voltage of almost 3v to 5v ..... and also i think they produce surges .... and to my little knowledge the surges and voltage fluctuation are harmful to the electronics / electronic devices and systems .

Additional, look to replace CRT with low power LED monitors. Try to use InkJet printers instead LaserJets when generator working.

Use On-Line UPS between generator and PC parts to filter power voltage, + UPS.
