homemade gps patch antenna

guys i would just like to ask.. is it possible to make home-made GPS? and where would that home-made GPS get its signal?:?:

What do you mean by "homemade"? DO you mean make your own GPS receiver?

You know, anything Is Possible, but GPS receivers are complex devices. Unless you do that kind of design eveyday, I think it would probably take a long time to design one. Besides, the cost of GPS receivers is so low (<$40 single quantity) that it isn't practical to design one yourself.

As said above, there is no point building your own GPS in the sense that it would
be more expensive than a fully working commercial device.
If you want to build it from scratch using a GPS chip (e.g. nemerix), and a
microprocessor (e.g. ARM), you need quite an accurate knowledge about
radio frequencies, antennas, and also some math to do the real calculation
from the signals you receive. That would be quite a performance.
But that's a good exercise.

Now if you want to put together a GPS module and some kind of microprocessor
or microcontroller and an LCD, then it's an easy task because you just use a
device that makes the hard work for you.

I never will think about a home made GPS receiver, is a very complex and hard to do job.

Hello!

I can be wrong, but I had a look at the page you mention, and apparently it's
made with a GPS module. Making a GPS with a module is a very easy task.
You take a development board, a module, you connect power, RX, TX and
that's all for hardware, as explained on the page I was mentioning.

The biggest difficulty in the page you mention is that if you do it from an old
cellular phone, then you have to extract the GPS module, and try to figure out
where are the power, ground, rx and tx lines. All the rest is easy, it's no more
than talking to a serial port.

If you want to create the module itself, get the signal from a patch antenna,
try to figure out what the GPS signal says, then it's more difficult.

Yes, it's possible to home-brew a GPS receiver. It has been done repeatedly by people who wanted to circumvent ITAR restrictions. To get the first demonstrable results it takes about 6 months of full-time work of a Ph.D. level specialist. And by the time you get the necessary equipment, you will have a fairly unusual home.

GPS signals always come from the same source - GPS satellite constellation. The signal is free too - courtesy of USAF.

Easy and difficult is a rather relative question.
Depending where you want to start your design.
Using a GPS IC chip will be faster.
Designing the GPS circuit from discrete components,
would of course takes more effort and time.
