Should high IQ people be required to do medical research instead of math and physics.? What would happen if more of the smartest people on Earth pursued a career in medical research? Would this improve the health of humankind in a significant way?

it might
it might not
no one knows what research or discovery may be made in something outside medicine that
will ultimately improve medicine.

a lot of research produced a lot of things it wasn't looking for -
silly putty, teflon, post-it-notes, slinky, ...

i would object to being required (forced) to work on something

If only every one of us (whether high IQ or average) were motivated to do what we can to improve the human condition.

Doubtless the human condition would improve. Medical health is an important part of it, of course. Already we have the means (medical technology) and ample people wishing to heal ailments of mankind.

However their noble efforts encounter bottlenecks, put in place by those with influence (and money), who use their IQ to enforce their will on populations.

As a result only a few benefit from the healing and caregiving sector. We can only hope for a future better day when the right people are in charge.
