intelligent traffic using microcontroller

HI
i am designing an intelligent traffic monitoring system. i intend upon using 8051. which type of sensor would be suitable. has anybody got a program 4 this project in c language....

Have a look at this publication:
"DEVELOPMENT OF AN AUTONOMOUS ADAPTIVE TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM"
http://www.erudit.de/erudit/events/esit99/12624_p.pdf
It will be a very good starting point ..

TRAFFIC DETECTORS
An essential feature of any dynamic traffic control system is its capability to compute traffic flow rates at the
controlled intersection. There are several methods to detect a passing vehicle (Klein L. A., et al, 1995), the most
common of which is the loop detector. The main advantage of the loop detector is that it is robust and reliable, since it
does not come in contact with vehicles and it is easily installed. Its principle of operation is based on the detection of a
vehicle as a metallic mass entering the magnetic field of an inductor and thus changing its inductance. This section
describes a loop detector which was designed and implemented for the new system presented in this paper.

What method you are using to detect the vehicles. Using a camera?

If you are using image processing to detect vehicle the processing power of 8051 will not be adiquate. You should move to a DSP (digital signal processor)
