We are wondering to install Virtual Machine/Box in Windows PC. Inside the Virtual Machine, we need to install Ubuntu 20.04.

I just found the link to Virtual Box.

Link to the Ubuntu 20.04-focal

Which image should I use.

Look like "ubuntu-20.04.6-desktop-amd64.iso" which is around 4.1 GB - Desktop image for 64-bit PC (AMD64) computers (standard download)

Question: If something goes wrong during the installation or at latter stage, can we just delete everything and get back to the normal Windows PC ?

Youe never leave the Windows PC when running VirtualBox, it's just an application and Ubuntu guest system is just a folder. Suggest to play around with it to get familiar.

I understand that Windows PC has to run all the time as primary OS and Ubuntu 20.04 in Virtual Box will be just a folder. We have 270 GB free space out of 550 GB free in C:/ drive. In total the local drive is 1 TB. RAM is 32 GB and processor is Intel i7.

How much maximum resources we can assign/put to Virtual Box ?

I have a similar system and sometimes run Linux virtual machines using Virtual Box and have no problems giving them 4 cores of the 8 I have and 8GB of the 32 that is installed. I give them about 50GB of dynamic virtual disc space. I don't run anything heavy and do not have many program installed, and they have all run without a hitch

Thanks for sharing your experience.

I have Ubuntu 20.04 in Virtual Box installed under Windows host OS. It's running fine.

Had to smile at this, I do exactly the opposite. I run Linux as my main OS (Kubuntu 24.10) and run Windows in VirtualBox on sad occasions that I actually need it.

If anyone else is in my situation, I find 'Crossover' a better way of running Windows applications because it emulates instead of providing a virtual disk. No Windows license needed and it runs faster than real Windows. I can even choose which version of Windows to emulate from XP to Win 11 so some old legacy programs still work fine.
