What is the difference between tarbals and rpm and how do we install them

Tarballs are just a tar (compressed) file. You have to extract them and run their install scripts to install them.

RPMs are binaries that your system can unpack and install for you to save you the effort (EX: Yast in SUSE).

If you are running any major distro (SUSE, RH, Mandrake, etc) then you can get the RPMs and save yourself the extra work ^_^
