I am sure many of you have seen shunt stub built using microstrip line on a pcb, but what about series stubs? It seems to me it is physically impossible. Is there anyway to build series stub matching network on a pcb?

coupled lines, with various opens or shorts at the ends, can be used. Usually less than a quarter wave at midband.

look around page 220 in mathei young and jones for approximate model ideas (these are TEM models, but are similar to the microstrip ones)

Series stubs are converted to shunt stubs using Kuroda identities, they are equivalent. The reason is what you point, impossibility or difficulty. Microstrip series stub looks impossible.

Thanks for sharing such a great document. I see that it's not impossible but not straightforward too.
