Ouch, tough problem!

A linear regulator will have to dissipate (24v - 5v) * 5A = 95Watts!

You are really going to have to use a switcher, unless you live in a cold climate and want to heat the room

If you absolutely have to design your own, I would suggest going to National's or Linear's site and use their virtual Cad stuff to select a circuit. The good thing is that 80% of all the new part announcements are for regulators.

Obviously, buying a module is the far easiest thing to do. If you look at Jameco or Mouser (in the USA) they sell surplus stuff pretty cheap. Your requirements (24v-5v) are not that uncommon.

What type of application is this? Hobby, conversion, new design. professional application?

Hello,

I think 5 A is a current level where you could think about switching controllers with external switches. LM2678 is generally a good choose , cause it's really a simple switcher needing minimal external circuitry. But 5 A is also the maximum continous current for this part. Wouldn't be good design practice to set nominal to maximum current.

This is the microcontrollers section, so what kind of power supply do you want? Digitally controlled, controlled by a variable resistor, with current and voltage displays, if what you want is only a simple power supply, you are posting at the wrong forum section.

LM2575 will handle only 1A current you can use TPS5450 from taxas will handle 5A

I'm posting my diagram here, I use it now for 25years+, on pin 2 of JP1001 you have regulated 5V and on pin3 you have 5V up to your input voltage that can be up to 32V, adjustable with VR1, if you replace the transistor with a 2N3055 with a proper heat sink you can draw up to 15 amp.

1002, C1004, C1005 have to be replaced with 50V components.

Would you like it if a cap blow up in your face? that is what happen, when you connect 32 volt to a 16volt cap. that is why I had to post the mod.

your design looks a very good design but ... did you mean i can neglect the second 7805 (U1002) and adjust the pot to get +5v at jp1001 pin 1 and how many amper can i get with bd911 or like

The BD911 max is 3amp an you can leave out the second 7805 you can also connect your first 7805 directly to GND then you will have 5V only but the 2N3055 is easy to get I only used the BD911 for the smaller package.

The best thing for this spec appears to use a switcher like UC3842 and a MOSfet and design an smps. it will help in realizing efficient power supply.
