Yesterday I used Hyperterminal to communicate both ways with a 16F877.

To be honest it was sheer luck because I had no clear idea how to set it in my Win ME machine.

I was confused not only for the so many type of terminals it can emulate but also for the so many protocols Kermit, etc etc.

I googled but information is overwhelming.

Any simple advice on minimal settings to send and receive ASCII and eventually binary?.

Additional, stupid question: having three COM ports in my PC (1, 2 and 4), the last with the phone modem, how I know beforehand if 1 or 2 will output through the 9 pins connector? Is any way other than testing to know that?

Help REALLY appreciated.

Try if this software runs on Win ME ..

If direct link doesn't work, try to copy and paste the whole line into the address icon ..
Another hint is - try to avoid using COM1 as this is Windows default serial port for devices such as a mouse, and it will be always looking for one there - COM2 seems to be better option ..

Hola Ian,

Thanks for replying. I've tried the link but no luck. I always appear in a Google page.

Could you help again? ¡Gracias!

Here is the link once again:
It has to look exactly like this (without quotation marks)
Try to re-write it or copy and past to the Address box ..
I have checked the link .. it works ..
Regards,
IanP

Replace:
(** = tt )

to check it:
Start Hyper - select port (1/3, 2/4) - select bits per second, data bits, parity, stop bit, flow control= none - Properties - Setting - select Autodetect at Emulation - and then jump pin 2 and 3 of port - you see any character when you enter from keyboard.

com 1 and 3 has the same address.
use the same to interface with your board ( depend on your setup port).
