When I need RTC I always use PCF8583.

Its i2c interface RTC, with 240Bytes of internal RAM witch can be used as well and this 240 bytes are battery supported.

Hi,

Look for DS1340

♦ Enhanced Second Source for the ST M41T00
♦ Fast (400kHz) 2-Wire (I2C) Interface
♦ Software Clock Calibration
♦ RTC Counts Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Day, Date,
Month, and Year
♦ Automatic Power-Fail Detect and Switch Circuitry
♦ Trickle-Charge Capability
♦ Low Timekeeping Voltage Down to 1.3V
♦ Three Operating Voltage Ranges (1.8V, 3V, and
3.3V)
♦ Oscillator Stop Flag
♦ Available in 8-Pin µSOP or SO Packages

If you need a very simple RTC, without internal RAM or EEPROM or other collateral features, you can use HT1381 (look at https://www.holtek.com for the datasheet) which has a very low price. It has a 3 wire interface with the MCU and should be connected to a 32.768KHz crystal and power supply (supercap, lithium battery, ...).
Also, somewhere in this forum you can find the C routines I use with that RTC.
Bye. Paolo
