how to make a simple tracking device?

I would like to make a simple tracking device..
say 100-150m tracking device.
The tracker device should be small.
Like a direction findeR, it should lock on the direction where the tracker is or it should make noise or beep when it is close to the tracker. :?:

if you start off "far away" from the car, perhaps only the low signal LED is on, you then have to toddle of in some random direction to see if it goes off or the next LED comes on (Hooraah! - right direction). This could be time consuming, so i think the inductance for the receiver should be wound on a ferrite rod, this way by rotating the rod, you can get the direction (+- 180 degrees) at the moment you start. Walking off at 90 degrees to this direction should then show which of the +- 180 degrees is the true one.
