[SOLVED] how to expand output pins of a microcontroller with a shift register

I want to know how to expand output pins of a microcontroller (say 16f84A) with the help of a shift register(for multiplexing need). My humble request to the members to help me! Simple diagram and simple code (asm or c) will be very much helpful.

Thank you for your suggested site. Last year I successfully created the circuit and working model by reading the suggested post (#2, above) by Sir. Alexan_e.
In my view links suggested in post #2 are clearer to understand.( as I konw C and assembly)
