how to determine the resolution of the filter?

how to determine resolution

Not DSP,so the resolution is depended on the performance.But I don't know how is the exact relationship between them.I can only know the resolution of the filter coefficient because of the performance,but how many is the adder/multiplicand output?.Thanks for answering.
