Need to desolder a DIP16

I need to desolder a DIP16. How can I do it without damaging the board? I have poor equipment - no desoldering station-just a pump.
I am - as always, open to suggestions

Hi

I do not know what type of chip it is but usually it is easiest/cheap enough just to cut the pins and them unsolder them one by one.
If you heat too much i can be easy to damage a mulilayer board.

If the holes are big enough it's no problem to remove the solder pin by pin using the pump. But if you don't need the chip anymore it's much safer for the PCB to cut all pins with a sharp knife (near the package), then remove the remaining pins and solder from the holes one by one.

These are quite severe solutions... If there is something better I will try to follow the cut advice. The chip is an astable multivibrator and the Q output is burned - now I have only the _Q . That's why I want to replace it. But cutting all the pins...I find it a bit brutal approach . Isn't there any other way? Something like warm all pins at ance and remove it? Isn't there any tool to do this?

Hi

Therer are tools but you said you only had a simple soldering iron. Is it dual or multilayer PCB?
If it is a multilayer PCB you might damage it, offcourse you can try but if you fail you failed.
If you deside to try heat pin by pin and use soldering wick and vaccuum to remove tin. If there are pace you can try to wiggle the pin to see if it is properly desoldered.

Well, when we were young, we used needle from medical syringe (the one, which has inner hole). You should select one, which has hole size big enough for DIP pins and outer size to fit in PCB hole. Then you should heat it with solder and move on pin to the PCB hole. Repeat this process for every pin. Usually, after this process you can easy remove DIP package from PCB.

Re: Need to desolder a DIP16

Your chip is dead. There is nothing brutal about cutting its legs then...

In fact, it is the best way to remove a DIP chip while avoiding a possible
overheating of the PCB, which could lead to the solder pads becoming
loose.

Get your cutting pliers out and get to work! You could have been finished
already, several posts ago...

Re: Need to desolder a DIP16

TO DESOLDER A CHIP :

Get SOLDER BRAID .. or also called solder wick .. is not very inexpensive ..
you can also maket it also by using the shielding of a COAX cable .is just the copper braid ..you apply heath to the BRAID and the pad that you want to unsolder.
the solder is suck by osmosis to the braid and the circuit pin or pad BECOMES clean
as a NEW ..
don't use a crapy PUMP if is not of GOOD QUALITY expensive one!
The braid or solder weak is cheap and great!
see here look under remove solder

additionally solder wick has a flux layer which improves the solder removal very much by destroying the oxid deposit on copper and tin.

Imho a pump is better suitable to desolder THT components than wick esp. if the holes are very tight. Solder wick is very good applicable for SMDs.
Btw. pumps can be tuned by applying a film of vaseline to the cylinder & piston

If cutting the pins seems too brutal, then maybe you don't have the correct wire cutter tool. I suggest buying a small precision flush-cut wire cutter. A good one can easily snip TSOP pins spaced 0.5mm. It may be somewhat expensive, but good tools are usually worth the investment.
