How to decide supply voltage?

what are the factors to consider when deciding on a Vcc supply voltage in your circuit?
 

Cost and performance are the main criteria.
Performance includes, efficiency, regulation, power consumption and speed of circuit design requirements vs supply voltage.

However in logic ALV technology offers both speed and low impedance at lower voltages than older technology CMOS by virtue of smaller lithography.
 

Probably the first thing to consider is devices' maximum/minimum tolerance.

A lot of IC's I've used were cmos (4000 series). Easy to power from a 9V battery.

Or I consider the output device. Often it has been for 6 to 12 volts.

Or I sort through my box of adapters to find one which provides both sufficient voltage and sufficient amperes.
 

In case of IC design, it is almost determined by the technology node that you are working in, you seldom have any options.
