Linux installation

I want to install a slackware version of linux. I only have one hard disk and in my computer i have already installed windows xp. I have left a lot of free space for linux but in the installation i have to create some partitions for the linux. Which partition should i create? Should i do this through windows?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Linux installation

You create linux swap partition(above 256MB) and Linux native partition (size your own choice) and file system Ext3 or riserFs.

Should they have a particular name?

Linux's partitions have no names as in DOS.

All devices are represented as files on Linux. So, first partition of first drive will be /dev/hda1 , second /dev/hda2 ...
