how to connect resistance

what will happen if 50 ohm resistance is connected in series with negative terminal of a motor through the source of 230V AC or DC supply

Same, as connected series in positive side.
 

My doubt is that whether the supply voltage will burn the resistor or not.
 

It is about power, you should calculate the power on the resistor, you should choose proper resistor.
