How to choose connector?

Hello all,

When I use FPGA to implement a design, I have to pull out several FPGA signals, may be 30, what connector shall I choose, what shall I consider first, freq?

If I want to extend the board, i.e. connect the board to another board, shall I use wire or use daughter<->mother board pair, what shall I consider first?

Regards,

Davy Zhu

Re: How to choose connector?

hi,

choosing a connector is very complex, and there is a big choice on the market.

If its for your work, you can ask to distributors : they provide technical details to help you...

for your connector, you shall regard the following points :
- estimate the number of insertion during the life cycle of your board
- if you have a particular standard to respect (PCI, VME, ...)
- for particular link, do not forget to segregate your signals, to separate them with ground pins
- if your doughter board will be powered by the mother board, check the power supply needed and assign the correct number of connector pins
- check the mechanical environment of your board (vibration, temperature)

Regarding the other topic concerning the P160 standard, it seems to be a good compromise ... but i don't have any performance report on this connection...

hope this will help you

Re: How to choose connector?

Do it like most FPGA Eval. card manufacturers do such as memec, xess and digilent. They typically bring out the pins on all four sides using single or double pin long male headers for easy access.

If you like to insert a card on top of your FPGA card then PC104 form factor type header is the best as done by Jacyl Technology.

For high speed interconnect (single-ended or balanced)
see SAMTEC products. They offer very good products
and you can order samples.
(SAMTEC`s connectors I find in ADI ADSP-BF533 dev.board)
