how to charging 12Volt battery

how to charge 12volt battery when it connect to 12volt power supply. and use this battery when main power is offline.
means switching should like
1. when external 12volt is apply then power should be use from external and battery will save.On the same time battery should get charged.
2. when power is un-available then it should use battery powered.

I don't know whether I got you right, from what you said it means that you need an automatic change over, if it is then let me know.
 

For this, you mainly need an switching circuit for change over from battery to main and vice versa. Also, go through the working of emergency lamp or UPS circuits and also for choosing the battery...

yes sir battery should be change over and i searched on google but confuse which is choose and which one will work properly.This circuit should be properly working because i am going to use it at my home as DIY with your help.
