Hi,

I've started working on a project and we are trying to build a sort of handheld gaming system with high end graphics and detailed 3d environments, so we are looking to incorporate a good GPU into our system along with a good processor, similar to what would be in some smartphones.

Since our product is aimed at a fairly niche market, we will be producing maybe 1000-2000 units initially.

So my issue is I'm having trouble figuring out where it is possible to source some of these high-end chips in the low volumes that we are looking at.

I have found several development boards with decent GPU's on them and they can be easily bought, but after that, trying to find the standalone chips that would be used in manufacturing (and to estimate costs at this early stage) has been impossible.

If anyone has any experience on this kind of low volume sourcing of these high end chips, I would love to have your input.

The kind of chips we are looking at include the likes of Qualcomm snapdragon, Nividia tegra and lower spec ones such as the ARM Mali GPUs.

there are B2B electronic parts websites around...........a distributor or agent might be able to help

note: usually they want payment in advance

A lot of mobile silicon is bespoke, maybe available to others but quite often it has been designed for a specific customer and is not readily available... But have a sniff round Samsung's site they do silicon for mobiles and displays.

Thanks for the replies guys. I was looking at a Samsung chip, the Exonys 5422, but alas my searches online have not found a way to buy the apart from purchasing the development boards.

Is it a matter of finding the B2B distributors and emailing them for a quote?

Thanks. Is it a matter of finding the B2B distributors and emailing them for a quote?

Usually you have to become a member, and post a RFQ - request for quotation. Vendors respond to your quote.
