How much SD_FORMATTER is really required ?

According link bellow, SD CARD performance could be optimized if used this software, instead standard OS formatting tool.
However, I wish know what aspects may be affected ( speed access / total size / etc... ) and what is the achieved gain.

nothing on the website nor the users manual that explains why it is better

the claims for speed and optimization sound bogus to me
