1 + 3 + 3 + 3 + 16 + 2 + 4 + 4 = 36

I found another 4 squares. The sum is therefore:
36 + 4 = 40 squares

i got 40 squares here ==16(1x1)+9(2x2)+4(3x3)+1(4x4)+mid squares(8(1x1)+2(4x4))
