How do i get the outline of a map or picture using MATLAB

Hi

I want to be able to extract the outline of a given image, the outline doesnt need to have anything inside and should allow me to place things within the map.


example: if I have a map of a university Campus, I want MATLAB to give me the outside line and remove things from the inside(buildings , roads).
