You question is quiet general... like asking how do I make food.

It depends on the application, modulation ,frequency of transmission, BW of the signal and Then when you characterized the transmitted signal you can go and choose from several common configurations of receivers.

direct conversion, superhet,low-if , software radio.

each receiver has it's benefits and draws.

Try searching in google and you will find as much knowledge as you need.
