The advert states "Heat switches off when air gun is in holder and switches on again when the gun is taken out for use" so I would guess whatever senses the proximity of the gun to the holder is broken, possibly a high impedance floating input is picking up noise from your hand.
I have a SMD rework tool which has a magnetic switch
in the cradle, and cuts heater power when it's placed
into the cradle. Maybe this has gone intermittent and
responds to mechanical movement of the cradle.
