High Frequency Devices

I'm wondering how circuits that operate under ultra high frequencies work, like the ones in oscilloscopes. I mean what kind of components they use that are responsive to such frequencies? For example amplifiers, are they customized? Can I find discrete and IC devices that have such bandwidth?

Another question, where can I find information about creating hi frequency oscillators and circuits? Can I prototype such circuits using breadboards?

High speed oscilloscopes use custom ICs. There are plenty of devices around that work at high frequencies though:

They aren't the sorts of devices that you can breadboard.

This is unfortunate that I cannot breadboard my Terahertz circuits

Are FPGAs or CPLDs how they make those custom ICs for microwave circuits?
