Hey Friends,

My computer came crashing down this weekend. Fortunately I had some back up but some of the files were not spared at all. However, the solution was just to resinstall the OS but I have to recover some files on my documents and desktop folder.

1.) the compaq_owner folder (the user account where my documents and my desktop need to be recovered) user account always denied access. and the file size is zero. The system just locked it up and i cannot access the my docs and desktop folders in it.

OS used: Windows XP

2.) I played around the DOS commands and and I saw this CACLS command but never successful in using it.

Can somebody plz help me recover those files.

Thanks

Here's some of the responses in CACLS DOS command

File Recovery Help

cih virus?!

Re: File Recovery Help

hello kabayan!

dont try to reinstall it.
Try to recover your system using your winxp installer.
first, boot using ur winxp installer then follow the instructions as if you are installing a new one.
there will be an option to repair your existing OS when the installation verifies that there is an existing OS in your pc.
should there be a problem, dont hesitate to ask again.

Re: File Recovery Help

make sure your PC have usb ,then connect your usb disk with your computor and find some software like virtual system, this software always can boot your PC from CDROM, after virtual system boot up, find file manager and you will find your all file on your hard disk, also you will find your usbdisk, then you can do all things like copy file and so on, if your harddisk is distroyed maybe this method does not works for your situations.

Re: File Recovery Help

Hi!
There are two possible reasons for you having access denied erros

1. Having a virus/ worm in the PC.

There are few symptoms of having worm - it will deny you the access to

the documents folder your specific user account but not other accounts.

if you are able to login in safe mode or safe mode with command prompt then try to create new user. You can make out if there is a virus in the system as it will not allow you access your documents folder from that new user login. now you have to log off and log on using your original account. copy all documents and mail from my documents and mail folder to root directory of Drive C in any folder say backup

2. Having a file system error.
Though this seems like a big problem - no need to panic. just try On track data recovery - I had tried it to recover 250Mb data from my hard drive as XP's file checking programs converted all folders to files and I was helpless. Try to connect any removable media as restoration drive. do not attempt to save recovered files on the same drive. If you are not able to access the external drive, then try to connect your laptop hardisk to any desktop PC via USB to IDE interface. and recover.
