Racing cars crono

Hello.
I've recently developed a racing car crono sytem using a graphic display LCD, a couple of PIC mcu, a time/date IC and an infrared beamer.
System works (like many others) with a coded beamer placed on pit wall and a receiver placed into the car. When car passes in front of pit wall, time is fetched.
I've also added a manual intermediate pushbutton placed on steering wheel under driver's requirements. Also, all data displayed are developed under driver's requirement to fulfill every needs they have.
I would like to improve the system removing the infrared stuff and using the signal that comes from transponder antennas placed in race tracks usually in finish line (and in more places. I've personally checked in various circuits, Monza for example has about 6 points, for intermediate and speed traps)
I've been told that the transponder system is quite the same in all racing tracks (I mean european ones) and effectively, transponders are always the same model..
I just need to know frequency and characteristics of the transmitter placed inside the track. There is an antenna made by two wires placed at about 50 cm one to each other, crossing the entire track from side to side. I've tried to bring a motorola teset on starting grid but I wasn't allowed to do that.. lol.
If anyone has some info regarding this, I'll be grateful.
racing crono was used in the Renault Clio Cup championship, season 2004. We won one race and got one pole. but it was not due to the crono..
