Help from knowledged ppl on choosing VLSI specialization.

Hi Sir,
I hav B.Tech in Electronics, 2008 passout with 72% and I am thinking of jumping into my core subject.
I have searched and found dis institute **broken link removed** for VLSI training.
Kindly go through d website and help me out please.
They claim they hav physical design and logic design.
What course is GOOD 4 growin in VLSI......
Is it not necessary to know both......?
What job pays the maximum salary in VLSI.
Kindly experienced ppl answer as freshers give me their own answer i need answer from ppl who know what they speak, not just free advice, good advice as i am VERY serious about this.

VLSI is too huge a field to specialize in everything.
In general it is broadly divided as Front End and Back End.

Front End is again divided as
a. Design
b. Verification
Although in some companies designers do verification, both are specialized jobs and need specialists specific to what they do.

Design is again split as Micro-Architecture, rtl design, synthesis and static timing analysis.

Verification is there as HDL based verification, PLI based verification and HVL based verification. All of these need to be covered.

Backend is the rest of the stuff, from netlist to tapeout. The netlist generated from synthesis is taken through the backend flow to get gds2.

Beyond backend is the silicon bringup, and validation.

There are also DFT, DFM apart from the above.

You can also take a detour into FPGA from the ASIC backend if you are working in FPGA based designs. FPGAs are recently making a lot of attration as the capabilities of FPGAs are on the rise.

Ooof so, VLSI is a huge huge field with lots of specialized jobs.
Frontend obviously has the most number of engineers.

So my opinion you need to firm up your electronics fundementals and try out the front end course. where I believe the opportunites are more. Go through all the institutes and their course content before deciding. Dont decide between two or three courses offered by the same institute.

And ofcourse as ljxpjpjljx mentioned in the above post there is analog design, which is a totally different game

thnx for the replies.

I have gone to tiit and spoken with them. I am interested in backend/ physical dsign as it's not available elsewhere and the pay is also good compared to FGPA.

And as per basics i am good but was impressed with the content.
I dont think i will digest it all but will take up a good topic and then stick to it.
Will post about my experience as soon as i start.

BTW there is some analog design using virtusa editor and drc using stick lol...or something in the scedule...... what do sticks have to do with vlsi...
the course is primarly digital.

It is clear - the number of jobs in VLSI front-end Verification for freshers is lot more than any other VLSI area, and traditional Verilog/VHDL alone isn't sufficient.
