Generator engine ECU programming

I have below question for CUMMINS engines purchased some time back and now these engines are due for overhaul etc…

And it’s normal that some of the ECU are getting problem.



What we have noticed that some of the ECU can start all engines and some of the ECU are not compatible with others.

Can you please advise how it works?



Is it every ECU has to be programmed for particular engine or we can ask supplier in future to have a common program for all engines?



Or, does any one assist me with software to program or copy an existing program from one Ecu to the other.
Please advise on the cable type and configurations that I can use in doing so.
The cummins model is QSX15-G8
 

I would doubt that each ECU is customized to a particular engine but there might be small differences in the engine designs from time to time that require slightly different software.

Most likely the manufacturer protects the firmware from being copied so I would doubt that any cable would allow you to read it from the MCU.

GM, which I am familiar-ish with, has had several series of
PCMs in the space of a decade.

Mass market vechicle mfrs have been encrypting the PCM
access and third party developers have learned to break
the encryption enabling consumer tuning cable/software
products.

Smaller marques with limited-run controllers don't get
the same support, tuning tools are thousands rather
then hundreds of dollars.

A question is, whether the generator ECU is the same
as might be found on Cummins diesel trucks. If so
then you might fins an existing solution, or find the
vendor of existing solutions capable of, maybe even
interested in gen'ing up a specifically compatible
code for you. I know the outfit who made my tuning
package, will accommodate folks who have low-run
vehicles if they use a "standard" PCM (code is platform
dependent but the same GM PCM hardware may serve
20+ model*year combos).

A key is, does the generator have an OBD-II interface?
A serial link of any kind? If no then all you have to go
on is old school - air, fuel, spark - with the instruments
you have at hand.
