Hi!
I want to realize a frequency synthesizer (1 GHz-3GHz) with PLL. I choosed the ADF4113. But i found another PLL from linear technoology with integrated VCO: LT6946-3. I need now your help:

what is the diffrence?
which way is better?

i hope you cuold help me!

Hiya yasine79,
Neat - I had no idea about Linear Tech's LT6946 - thanks for bringing it to my attention!

Of the two PLL's, it's definitely the better (read: more convenient) since it includes an integral VCO. I haven't checked its availability, but the words on LT's website are cause for concern: "This Product is subject to United States Export Control and may require a license for export to certain countries". Hmm - I wonder if you or I can get one?!

I've been using the ADF4350 for similar applications which also includes a VCO. The phase noise spec of the LT6946 is better though, and would be my choice - availability (and price?) permitting.

Cheers :)

An afterthought: If minimum phase noise is important to you, I'd expect you'd do better with an external VCO than an integrated solution. At least that *used* to be the case ...!
