If you combine the two components, it implies they will produce a resonant type of action. It is useful as either a bandpass filter, or bandstop (nothch) filter.

Which type you desire makes a difference as to whether you construct an LC tank loop, or an LC series loop. Also what node you tap for your output, in relation to other components.

And also as a lowpass or highpass - of course (as for bandpass and bandstop applications) together with a resistive component.
