FETs VS MOSFETS used as switches

What is the difference in using FET or MOSFETS?

I have seen circuits that use FETs and MOSFETS for as a switch for switching, but I don't understand why a designer would choose a MOSFET instead FET or vise versa

What do MOSFETS do that is different then a FET?

I think a MOSFET can switch a higher voltage then a FET can
 

They are almost the same thing. In common language usage, we tend to refer to the bigger, high voltage, high current devices as "Power MOSFET" or just "MOSFET" for short. The smaller devices used in low power applications are often JFETs. There is a difference in their construction but the families overlap quite a lot.

Power MOSFETs are usually optimized for low 'on' resistance so they have minimum power loss when carrying high current, JFETs are usually optimized for low gate capacitance so they can switch or amplify at higher frequencies.

Other than some of the new eGaN power devices, JFETs
and HEMTs are not "normally off" (@ Vgs=0). So they are
wasteful at low output power. This is why the MOSFET
took over, originally.
 

So when do designers use JFETs? and when do designers use MOSFETS?
