FET depeltion Region not touching each other when we increase Vds alone

When the Voltage Vds is increased the Depletion width also increases and will get saturated at pinch off.

My doubt is , When VDs increases why the depletion regions touch each other and stops the current flowing through it.

Pls clarify..
