Ferrule size for use with connector?

How did you arrive at this strange conclusion? The datasheet is specifying cable cross-sections, ferrule size must comply with the cable gauge.

yes, but as you know, we want a good connection, and a good connection will only be gotten if the ferrule diameter is the same as the diameter of the hole, otherwise there will be insufficient surface area of the contact?

Also, if the ferrule diameter is too small, then surely there is the danger that the ferrule, under vibration , may slip from the screw slightly, and settle into a position where there isn't as much metal to metal contact.

I am surprised that the screw shown does not feature an anti-vibration washer with it?..surely one would be needed?

The reasonable point in your post is that screw terminals have limited vibration strength.

I don't see how a screw-locking device should be applied to this type of screw. If you worry about vibrations, use cage-clamp instead of screw terminal for direct wire connection.
