Besides Ubicom´s SX microcontrollers, what are the fastest ones on the market right now?
And what are the ones with the best price/speed ratio?

Atmel is a good choice

PIC clock= fosc/4
SCENIX clock = fosc/4
80c51 clock = fosc/12
ATMEL clock = fosc/1

Texas Instruments MSP430 are good choice, but they have max. 60kB internal flash memory and no external data bus.

hi .. texas 2xxx family is quite power full with usefull features (flash, ram, ...)

If you prefer an 8051 core, the DS89C420
is advertised as the fastest 8051-compatible
microcontroller.

If you prefer an 8051 core, (clock = fosc, not fosc/12) look at:

**broken link removed**

and

**broken link removed**

The Cygnal C8051Fxxx is a family of in-system programmable, mixed signal System-on-Chip microcontroller products. They integrate world-class analog, a high-speed (up to 50MIPS) pipelined 8051 CPU, ISP Flash Memory, and on-chip JTAG based debug in each device.

Dallas Semiconductor - Maxim (DS89C420 33 MIPS) expect to break the 100 MIPS barrier in the near future. (2004?)

Scenix

Scenix is pretty good and overclockable up to 120-150MHz...

cb30, Scenix is also fosc/1 if you set Turbo bit while programming.

Hitachi H8s and SH-dsp are good choices
too

uuaaooo 120 -150 Mhz. don't think much more "laser" sorry i have not remeber all clockrate.
Regards cb30

The fastest microcontroller is FPGA! ;)
Yes, for real, implementation of popular uC architecture in FPGA sometime could be in 10 time faster than original one! Of course, you will go out without some peripheral resourses like on-chip A/D, but from another point of view, Scenix' SX serie also has near no peripheral on-chip. Moreover, taking into account that modern FPGA price is on the same level with uC from Cygnal, this idea has good chances to be considered during selecting of the fastest and best.

Really, FPGA? But a lot a things to study with fpga than with alone microcontroller. I prefer the kind which is fast and well-known for convenience.

Motorola DSP568xx is an hybrid MCU/DSP with up to 400 MIPS...
It also have an external bus and ADC/Serial/pwm/timer/daRam/flash on chip! :)

Not only, but Motorola gives also an interesting SDK with no cost!

BLACKFIN DSP (ADSP-21535) has 300 MIPS! Joint venture of Analog Devices and Intel. It has dual MAC / PCI bus interface/ USB interface.
