True, but those are fairly vague terms. If it has a series diode it has to carry almost an Amp continuously which means it's a big one, the air flow in the center will not keep it cool. The fan alone may survive reversal but can it's inputs and outputs handle it?
With the polarity reversed, the PWM input will be at or near to 48V and there would be serious risk of whatever drives it being frazzled. If the schematic is accurate, the PWM input transistor may well break down and the monitor one will at best have excessive voltage on it.
