Fan hs reverse polarity protection?

The specification shows internal circuitry and the fact that it has PWM speed control confirms that. It may survive a polarity reversal, it may not, it would certainly put it well outside it's comfort zone. Any internal polarized capacitors would probably be toast but the semicinductors may survive.

If you have actually conneced one in reverse, check the circuit driving the PWM hasn't been damaged. The schematic on the data sheet suggests it may have sourced excesive current to the PWM wire.

True, but those are fairly vague terms. If it has a series diode it has to carry almost an Amp continuously which means it's a big one, the air flow in the center will not keep it cool. The fan alone may survive reversal but can it's inputs and outputs handle it?

With the polarity reversed, the PWM input will be at or near to 48V and there would be serious risk of whatever drives it being frazzled. If the schematic is accurate, the PWM input transistor may well break down and the monitor one will at best have excessive voltage on it.
